Infant Reflux Symptoms

Infant reflux symptoms provide discomfort to many babies who have the disorder. Acid reflux occurs in the first three months of age in more than half of all babies in the world. In some ways the symptoms are also like that of the adults except of the chest pain. Below are some of the symptoms in infants associated with the condition:

1. The very common symptom is the spitting out during or after feeding. While crying babies with infant reflux may spit up. Discomfort, distress and pain while spitting up indicates more serious infant acid reflux.
2. Other infant acid reflux symptoms are irritability and colic. Irritability while feeding often accompanied by poor eating. Sudden crying, pain and colic are considered not normal acid reflux symptoms for infants and should be reported to the pediatrician as soon as possible.
3. Extreme pickiness about foods or textures, food tolerances, refusing food, eating only a few bites despite of hunger are also considered as infant acid reflux symptoms. These symptoms are very noticeable to the babies especially when your baby is eating very well before.
4. There also respiratory symptoms that occur like constant runny nose, stuffy nose, frequent upper respiratory infections, sinus infections, bronchitis, croup, wheezing asthma, night cough, throat clearing, noisy or labored breathing, hoarse or deep voice. The rarest respiratory symptoms are pneumonia, aspiration and sleep apnea.
5. Symptoms that affect the baby’s dental condition like tooth enamel erosion, excessive salivation or drooling are also considered.
6. Poor sleeping pattern, frequent waking, frequent ear infections, resists lying down, crying when placed to lie on the back or on a flat surface and sleeps only when upright or on shoulders, car seat, and wedge are some of the infant acid reflux symptoms.

To know all of the possible symptoms gives you an idea if your baby has acid reflux. Sometimes doctor’s make a diagnosis of acid reflux based on the parent’s description of the symptoms, feeding history and physical exam even if your baby is healthy. Infant acid reflux symptoms should be well observed and if you suspected that your baby has acid reflux, immediately bring your baby to your doctor for confirmation and treatment.
