Signs and Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

I went to my doctor today to discuss the signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome that I have been experiencing.

It is not a pleasant thought to think that I could be burdened with this disorder, nor is it a pleasant feeling.

For those of you who do not know what irritable bowel syndrome is, consider yourself lucky.

Irritable bowel syndrome is an intestinal disorder that causes the muscles of the organs or the nerves that control the organs to not work properly. As a result of this the organs do not function normally.

So imagine sitting in a room full of people and your irritable bowel syndrome starts acting up. Trust me… this is not a pretty sight.

The cause of irritable bowel syndrome is not well understood. With irritable bowel syndrome the movement of the digestive tract is impaired. There however, appears to be no changes in the physical structure like inflammation or growths. It is thought that the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are related to the miscommunication between the brain and the intestinal tract which causes abnormal muscle contractions in the intestines.

There are several signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. The main symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are abdominal pain or discomfort that occurs with constipation or diarrhea. Mucus in the stools and bloating are additional symptoms that can occur with irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome I have found out is one of the most common intestinal disorders. Many people with irritable bowel syndrome go between periods of constipation and diarrhea. Irritable bowel syndrome does not get worse over time and does not lead to a more serious disease. At least I know this is as worse as it is going to get.

The signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are what are used to help diagnose the disorder. Once additional test such as stool analysis or a sigmoidoscopy have ruled out any other possibilities for the symptoms, irritable bowel syndrome is usually the diagnoses.

Treatment for the signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome is fit to individual needs. Irritable bowel syndrome is a manageable condition. Treatment usually consist of diet and lifestyle changes, managing stress and avoiding foods the may trigger symptoms like dairy products, chocolate, caffeine and fatty foods. Medications may also be prescribed.

So if you have the signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome you should talk to your doctor regarding treatment options. There is no cure for irritable bowel syndrome but there are some steps that you can take to make your symptoms easier to manage.
