Stomach ulcer diagnosis is very important because the medical treatment for the different types of ulcers varies. Upper GI or a gastrointestinal series may be included in the diagnosis. To make the ulcer visible on the x-ray in this test, the patient is made to swallow chalky liquid called barium.
Endoscopy is also another test used for stomach ulcer diagnosis. In this procedure, a small instrument is threaded through the mouth, esophagus, stomach and duodenum. The entire upper GI tract could be clearly seen because of the tiny camera on the end of the instrument. To test if the bacterium Helicobacter pylori is present, a small sample of the stomach lining might be taken and tested. A biopsy can also be done to check if there is cancer.
To test if there is Helicobacter pylori, blood breath and stomach tissue are also used. However, they can sometimes give a false positive or negative result hence not all of these tests are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration or FDA. Studies show, however, that they can detect the bacterium which causes the ulcers.
There are several factors that are to be considered in the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers. These are the health, medical history, age, severity of condition, medicinal and therapy tolerance and preferences of the patient. Changes in the diet, such as eating habits and avoiding alcohol may be recommended. People with ulcer should not smoke because it inhibits or delays effective treatment.
Stomach ulcer diagnosis in patients with severe cases or if they do not respond well to medications may require surgery. There are different types of surgery that may be effective. A laparoscope is a thin, long instrument similar to an endoscope which has a camera placed at one end which allows the surgeon to operate through small incisions.
Another procedure is a vagotomy wherein parts of a nerve that sends messages from the brain to the stomach are severed. This will stop messages to secrete more acid, thus lessening the amount of stomach acid.
The danger of getting sick with ulcer is still high despite recent medical advancements. Studies also show that combined with proper exercise, a healthy lifestyle, adequate sleep balanced nutrition, prayer, quiet reflection and a positive attitude increases the chance of an ulcer-free life. Stomach ulcer diagnosis is very important if there are ulcer symptoms for proper treatment.
